Hi guys,

I have convinced a small business to upgrade their entire
network. windows workstations and linux server.

In order to make it easier for them, I suggested we do it in
stages, workstations first then server.

Anyway, the current network is an NT server with the
standard 5 user licenses, and 5 win95 and 98 clients.

The NT server has absolutly no service packs loaded, and its
just used as a file server.

Anway, today I upgraded one of the win98 clients (wasn't
98SE) to XP SP1 after upgrading the ram in the system to
256MB and the install want flawlessly.

However I can't get it to connect to the domain on the NT
server.
I thought this might be a case of windows XP using encrypted
passwords and such but a look in the MS helpfile on XP says
that the default is to not do that.. is that true??

IS this likely to be the problem I am having???

I used exactly the same settings in XP that the machine had
in win98.

IP: 192.168.0.13
GATEWAY: 192.168.0.1
WINS: 192.168.0.1 (which is the IP of the NT server.)
NAME: OLDKEN
DOMAIN: HAMMON

And tried to log on as the same user with the same password.
After about 2 minutes, I get a message along the lines of
the computer not being allowed access.
or access denied.

Should I need to setup a computer account on the server even
though its the same machine with all the same details only
XP instead of 98?

If I was using a different computer account, I would (on the
NT4 Server) go into Server Manager, and on the Computer
menu, click "Add to Domain". Then type in the name of the
new windows box, as an "NT Workstation or Member Server",
but the computer is using the same name.. so I should not
have to do that.

If the problem is the encryption, should I disable
encryption in XP or would I be better off trying to find the
6 service packs for NT4 ??? (any ideas where I could get
them in a hurry?)

Any advice here would be much appreciated, I can hardly
remember NT4 its been so long, and most of my experiance
with NT 4 server was when used with SBS. (and I never had to
worry about XP back then.)

I can't wait to fdisk NT and load linux on, but its a
working network and I am not permitted to take it down and
do the lot in one hit so I have to get XP working with the
existing server first and finish upgrading the workstations.

regards

Franki
