[newbie] still strange terminal problems

i am still having strange problems with gnome-terminal in mandrake 6.1. 
if i start it from within X, then it always locks up my machine
completely, even the keyboard.  num lock wont even turn on.  however, it
works fine if i run it from console.  does anyone have any idea why this
happens?  what is X doing differently (or wrong)?
also, i have seen mention of mandrake 6.1.1.  does anyone know if this
has a newer version of gnome in it?
