This sounds much like the problem I had recently when my / ran out of 
space.  /usr was the biggest section, so that was what I tackled.  
How I did it is documented on 
http://mandrake.vmlinuz.ca/bin/view/Main/Problems under Drive Full.  
I had a lot of help from the expert list with that problem.
