I have an AC 97 soundcard on 2 of my boxen and both work fine. Hardrake reports the following
Soundcard ICH4 845G/GL Chipset AC'97 Audio Controller Module i810_audio Alternative drivers snd-intel8x0 Mandrake 9.1 automatically found and configured sound on both boxen without my help.
