Might be (probably is in fact) a sensor alarm. Are you running gkrellm and lm_sensors? If so it may be a conflict in the sensor routine. I had this problem once when the sensors were mis-reading the core temperature on my processor. It was reading about 2.5x the actual core temperature and the alarm was going off almost continuously.
