What I did was download the j2re from Sun, open a super user terminal in the 
directory I downloaded it and then used the following commands:

sh j2re-1_4_2_01-linux-i586-rpm.bin

urpmi j2re-1_4_2_01-linux-i586.rpm

ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_01//plugin/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so 
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/

The last one is all one line with a single space after the .so.

Everything works as expected.
