Did you see this ? http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/errata.php3#alsaconf alsaconf is very effective at setting up your sound card. It will write the driver configuration into /etc/modules.conf but be aware it will overwrite the existing contents, and will not replace the non sound lines of the file.
