1) Disable PNP on the modem, if possible.
2) ln -s /dev/ttyS<X> /dev/modem
3) netcfg
4) /sbin/ifup ppp0

Them's the straight answers, I'm sure after all the reading you can fill
in the missing blanks.  :)
