I put the following script in my .kde/Autostart directory: 

#!/bin/sh
echo -e "Message of the day:\n\n`/usr/games/fortune`" | cowsay |
xmessage -center -file -

(I tried gmessage, but it doesn't work as well due to proportional
fonts...)
