You should be able to do that; you also might want to have a look at
XFce4, which is nice eye candy, full-o-features, and light. I'm running
it on a P333MMX with 64 RAM and it does very nicely on that.

That computer also has an ISA soundcard which MDK detected and
configured, which impressed me.
