Depending on how old the hardware is, I have had success with older machine installs by using "linux ide=nodma" during the install.

I had the same error with a 32b version.  Do you install from CD?  If so the cd you use might be bad.  I tried to do network install and it worked (well, I had a different error and I still haven't installed the os, but that's different story).  If installing from net is not good for you for some reason, try to burn the cd again.

It says it can't recover and I should reboot?
