I had this happen to me once, and found that the permissions for a ton of files changed from my username to the numeric userid (and the wrong one at that). Since the userid was "502" (this was a while ago. Could have been 501, instead), instead of "glenn", I was refused access. All of the affected files had the lock icon. I used Konqueror as root to change them to "glenn", and all was well again.
