Easiest answer? Install "kopete", "amsn" or "gaim" on your Linux PC, sign up for a Microsoft Passport and Hotmail/MSN Messenger Account, and start talking to your buddy.
The way I see it, if Micro$haft is going to try and $crew everyone, might as well return the favor a little, yes?
