Nope - didn't seem to 'take' when I tried that. You got me thinking the right way though I think. I found a file /home/me/.kde/share/mimelnk/application/octet-stream.desktop I made a copy, then deleted it. Things seem ok so far - I'll post again if something else appears broken. Thanks Brian
