Will someone tell me how to install only the kernel from www.kernel.org?

I am not sure what you mean by "only the kernel". What you can download from www.kernel.org is the source code for the kernel. You then have to configure it for your system, compile it, and install it. It is not like installing the compiled kernel from a Mandrake RPM.

The advantage is that you can fine-tune the kernel for your hardware. The disadvantage is that you don't get any of the patches that Mandrake applies to the kernel source. It is also a bit more work, takes more time, and a bit more knowlege. If you feal you want to try this, then the first step would be to track down and read the HOW-TO on compiling your own kernel. (Hint - you should find a link to the HOW-TO on the www.kernel.org web site.)
