Alt+F2 is simply a way of entering a command line instruction without
bothering with opening a terminal window. From it you can run any command.
Most of the commands you will be interested in are in the folder /usr/bin

To start Impress directly use the command 'soffice -impress'
(Or 'ooffice -impress') The command 'soffice -h' will list the available
options for starting the application.

As for thunderbird. urpmi will privide the latest version available on the
servers you have defined. MandrakeSoft do not issue updated applications such
as thunderbird unless there is a security issue that requires it. If you want
to get the latest and greatest versions of applications you must add
additional urpmi sources such as Mandrake Club or Charles Edwards' source
(http://www.eslrahc.com/) Thunderbird 1.0.4 is on Charles' site.

Another site I like is http://norlug.org/?op=rpms
