As far as Mandrake is concerned, housekeeping has to be done sometime. By default it is done in the middle of the night. If you switch off at night you are heading for trouble unless you make other provision for housekeeping. This is done by installing anacron, which makes sure that any housekeeping that has not been done overnight gets done when you boot up. HTH
