Michel, as far as I understand you want to log in as a new user in order to see if KDE works, OK ? If so, just create a new user from a root konsole, like this : # adduser [username here] Then you'll be prompted for a new unix password, just choose some and carry on. When done, log out of the root session, kill the X server by pressing <Ctrl><Alt><Backspace> and log in as the new user, choosing KDE . If the problem is some setting in your old .kde directory, the new user's KDE will work just fine.
