Why not use Gentoo, where each package is compiled on the fly for the processor in question? I have a Pentium 266 laptop with 144mb, that runs 10.x pretty poorly, well the video stinks, and I have been thinking of running another distro to see if it would be better. 9.2 ran on it pretty well.
