[newbie] Linux/Windows Network

I have 9 computers running Windows 98 used in a simple Microsoft network  I
want to set up a  webserver for the network using Linux-Mandrake 6.0 but
can't seem to get the Ethernet card or the computer to be seen by them or
for the Linux machine to see the Windows98 workstations.

I've set up the Ethernet card manually and tried to ping the others but no
luck.  What am I doing wrong?  Have I missed something??
