the way *I* handle this is to boot to a boot/rescue floppy and then
run e2fsck /dev/hdc2 (to use your situation.) You can't run fsck on a
mounted partition. Of course, at the point it's complaining, you can
just type the "root" password and run "fsck /dev/hdc2" from the
prompt. That should take care of it.
