Log in as root, and type Xconfigurator. Then the display setting prog will
run. choose your monitor, and all the rest. When you get to the display
mode setting click "let me choose". now go to the column where it says
16-bit and put a star in which ever mode you want then choose "ok". It will
then run Xwindows and ask you if you want to keep the setting and then ask
if you want Xwindows to start when you reboot your computer (I recommend
choosing "no", the prompt is a lot better!!).
And there you are, the default is set! Have Fun!!
