I solved the problem by using a rescue disk to load a minimal linux on my
system, using fdisk to create my partitions, then restarting the install.

Ok...silly question ... you DID *create* some partitions
for Mandrake to install onto, right? Or is it getting that
far?
Have you gotten to the part where it asks where to install
to?
