Brent,

Are you trying to ping ip's or dns names... it could be that your dns is
not properly setup. This is actually a pretty simple thing to do. Edit
your /etc/resolv.conf file so it looks like this:

search  isp's_domain
nameserver ip_num_of_your_isp's_nameserver

Also you may want to add the line

0.0.0.0   yourusername

To the /etc/hosts file.  These two changes made my machine work perfectly
in all inet related applications.
