[newbie] HEEEELP.. mouse probs

It's now taken me almost two weeks to get Linux installed on my 
system, and NOW the mouse doesn't appear to want to play ball!

It (MS intellimouse USB. no ball, glowing red an' all that) was 
responsive all the way through the installation process. But from 
the KDE login screen onwards, the pointer just refuses to move.

Any suggestions?
