Thanks for the response folks, I stupidly assumed that the telnet server had
been installed  .... we all know what assumed means ---- right?

In answer to Oves question, I telnet in using both linux and w98 machines,
w98 works ok for the limited work I do through telnet.

Secondly, I uninstalled the BERO-ftpd and installed the wu-ftp, and it now
works.

Thanks for the quick responses, and sorry for the duplicate posting, seems
to be a six hour turn around on mail here sometimes!!
