Hi,
you mean the modem seems to connect well but linux canīt find any URLīs?
Well, I had this too, but was able to solve that yesterday with the info
given in mails from this list- many thanks guys!
Let me briefly summarize what I (=newbie) did:
1) my modem was hooked up to a 9-to25 pin serial adapter- I hooked up
the mouse to that and connected the modem to the "real" 9-pin com-
afterwards i swapped the com cables on the mobo so I donīt had to change
all the configuration for modem/mouse in linux (thanks for the tip, Jon!)
2) added the line "noauth" to "/etc/ppp/options"
3) added my ISPīs DNS domain name and IP to "/etc/resolv.conf"
4) entered all the info for my ISP in kppp settings and connected.
Youīll want to enter the info your ISP gave you here and have a closer
look at the IP-field where it says "configure hostname automatically
from this IP" at the bottom of the page. The exact words may vary as I
have german language here and just translating it into english myself!
Anyways, you may want to uncheck this box because it overrides the info
given in the DNS-field and forces linux to search for nameservers itself.
At this stage, the modem would connect properly w/o pppd deaths and
reconnect tries, but would not find any URL (your problem?!), so I
guessed there must be still a problem with DNS servers. So I
5) ran linuxconf, went to "network-->DNS-configuration" and saw an entry
"check DNS-availability". If this entry is checked, please *uncheck* it!
I donīt know exactly what it does but apparently dialouts only work for
me if I uncheck this. Close linuxconf to apply the settings.
6) Try to connect again- the log file will still stop at "CONNECT
115200" but it worked for me now!
Good luck,
and thanks again for all the help I got from lurking in this list.
