curtis, go ahead and try it.
The instructions come with the lucent download and the program told me what 
I was doing wrong. (I had to get a new kernel)
It figures out what port the lucent is on and creates the /dev/modem link to 
match it.

Try it! Shouldnt hurt anything. (famous last words)
