Jay;

Try looking at the file "/var/log/dmesg".   This tells you what linux
finds each time it starts.  And what it assigns to your drives.  Or
append a copy of it to an email and maybe someone on this list could
help you.  My internal zip is a IDE but linux thinks it's a SCSI.  So
instead of assigning it "hdd", it assigns it "sd0".  Your mileage may
vary.
