It's a lot safer on linux.
When you say you have to use those things, do you mean that you need to
be able to go to a friends house and log into your machine from the
internet to ftp files FROM your machine, Read mail FROM your
machine,etc.?
if not then do
man hosts.deny
and read how to close some stuff.
