If you are going to wipe disk and start over may I make a suggestion?  I
have seen some strange behavior by M$ version of fdisk.  Including the
problem you are having...

use fdisk from withing linux to REMOVE all partition and then reboot. 
Using your dos boot disk with fdisk on ot do
fdisk /mbr and then REBOOT again!
Now try the M$ fdisk again.

Had a drive once that thought it was 1/15th it's real size and had to
fix it this way.  Drove me nuts for days, tech support calls and all
that.  Hope this helps, Be SURE to do reboot at each step.
