now im having a similar problem with my kppp connection... it recognizes my 
modem... communicate with it but when i make the dial up it freezes my 
Xwindow ( KDE in this case ) and nothing more happens, it stay in the 
initialitation modem.... and nothings happens except that i have to restart 
my xserver. By the way i have another problem, right after my install ( 
mandrake 7 on a amd k6 II 500 mhz processor with 64 Ram) the mandrake 
doesnt mount any of my cd roms ( my cd rom and my cd writer ) it shows me a 
message saying that it cant mount the specefied registry or something 
similar.... and my sound doesnt soun either.. but it recognizes my sound on 
board .. my mother board is a VIA board. I am so sick and tired i am just 
about to switch to win blows again... since i am experimenting so many 
 problems with my new linux ( in the past i had the 6.1 version with a 100 
Mhz and 32 RAM  and it works perfectly .. both linux and windows..... now 
either system works well.. as a matter of fact i even cant install win 98 
by another reasons)
i hope you can help me in this matter

Are you using the authentication that your ISP requires - either PAP or
