[newbie] CD Burner wont respond

I installed an IDE cd burner today (finally) and although Mandrake
recognizes it, it doesn't seem to be able to access it. I put the slave
jumper on, made sure the master cd was set right, plugged it in to the
end of the ide cable, and the light comes on when it boots and the POST
test as well as the stuff that scrolls by as Mandrake is preparing to
run.

Any ideas? Do I have to recompile my kernel?
