Hi Paul,

You probably told the installer to check the video modes. I have heard
(and once also experienced) that sometimes probing the video card for X is
not a good idea all of the time. Depends on your hardware a lot, so I
can't tell when you should and when you should not.

If you have logged in, you can start X with

startx

If you can't get anywhere further than the grey screen and the x's, press
ctrl-alt-backspace to kill the x-server. From there you need to log in as
root and run Xconfigurator to redo/finish the X setup. Do -not- let the
system probe the video card at the point it asks to. Finished
succesfully? Then you can log in as you again (or me, which is the
same) and startx should get you going then.

If you can post the type of videocard you have, perhaps some people can
already tell what pitfalls you have to be aware of if there are any.

If things go well installing X, and you want to have the graphic login,
you need to log in as root again, and change the file /etc/inittab,
changing the initdefault from 3 (text login) to 5 (graphical login).

Good luck
Paul

No matter what scientists say about her,
