Checked it, I declare my PATH and CLASSPATH next to each other and export
them in the same statement. It takes my classpath, but fails to take my PATH.

I get
/sbin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:

no matter what I set my path to in /etc/profile still.

Any other ideas?
