are you refering to 'spyware' as seen in download manager go!zilla and
other progs?
it uses software by aureate and is incorporated into netscape
smartdownload which newer versions of netscape use to upgrade itself if
you so choose, i don't know if this applies to linux - i doubt it, this
software reportedly keeps track of your surfing habits and send a record
to a central database somewhere
