You might try using something like PQMagic's Partition Magic to delete the
/hda1 partition completely, then start over.

If it is an old drive, and the drive optimisation settings were not quite
correct, I think that could have done something to the drive itself.  Though
I've never experienced this, I have heard this can happen.

I often have problems similar to this when I do drive image restoration on
Gateway computers--Gateway is notorious for writing failed installs and bad
partition tables to their machines. Usually I get Partition Error #113 if I
try to look at the drive with Partition Magic, but I'm so accustomed to this
now that if Drive Image will not write to the drive, I automatically delete
the partition.

It is a possibility that you may have corrupted the partition table and the
MDK install cannot recognise it beyond the error...

It's a shot..
