Marcia....you said in an earlier message that you had a
'computer crash' several weeks ago.  That, along with the two
odd symptoms you describe above lead me to believe that
something about your Linux installation has been seriously
damaged.  I don't know if it's fixable or not, but given your
lack of experience with Linux, I'd recommend you do a complete
new Linux install.
