Switchdesk disappeared here also.
You can check if there is an .xinitrc file that messes things up.
In your .Xdefaults you could write

exec gnome-session

Make sure that your .Xclients file does not kick you into KDE though. You
can put the exec in there instead of in .Xdefaults.

and that should get you back to gnome.
