Perhaps a bit simple, but: did you try a reboot? By the sound of it, you
leave the system running logged into X. I also have the system running,
but I always shut down X and log out when I am not there. Remember, a
window manager is a program, and that may affect the memory after a
certain time. Even though this is not happening nearly as fast as in
Windoze, it can happen.
I'd suggest to shut down, switch off power for 15 seconds to allow the
memory to empty itself. And then try again.
The remark about the modem.lock: did you have some abnormal abort
yesterday? That might cause a lock file to stick around. Can't help you
with that though, I do not use a modem but an ISDN connection.
