I used to do ftp installs in my RedHat 5.x/6.x
days and they did require you to boot off a
(two, in fact) floppy disk first.

As for network boot, it is possible through tftp.
You might want to get a manual of the machine first
and find out what exactly does boot from "network"
mean.
