i am having trouble getting system sounds to work, they appear to be
configured and the arts server set to start at start-up. playing in xmms and
noatun works fine, investigating shows that when i run artsd from a console i
get:

[artsd] ** Warning ** unix_connect: can't connect to server
(unix:/tmp/mcop-root/mycroft_excession-0dca-3b193bfe)
There are already artsd objects registered, looking if they are active...

it would seem clear that there is a problem, if i try to run arts control i
get the error 'check to see if artsd is really running, and that kdelibs is
not an ealier version then kdemultimedia', the latter is not true so i guess
the message just tells me what i already know, but i can't find anything in
the archives referencing this problem.

quite a few people having a problem with system sounds but no solutions that
seem to bear on my situation, i have noticed that alsa doesn't appear to run
from the control center>services dialogue, when i run this it is shown as
stopped even though it is set to run at boot, is this relevant, i have always
been confused about the difference between 'alsa' and 'sound' services at
boot up, do i need both or just one?

some clarification would be gratefully received
