[newbie] can't startx

[Errant]

Hi all,

I suddenly can't get x up and running on my LM8 box. After issuing 
the startx command as Root from console, it returns the following:

>Could not init font path element unix/:-1, removing from list!
>
>Fatal Server Error:
>could not open default font 'fixed'

Can someone help me fix this, and explain how it might have happened?
