I qualify as an almost rank newbie. I've been a recovering Windoze-holic for
almost two weeks now. I had installed but only sparingly used Mandrake 7.0 a
year ago. I had tried and failed to install Mandrake 7.1 and 7.2 (display
problems mostly), plus another local (Denver, Colorado) release based on Red
Hat. Now I'm on Mandrake 8.0

8.0 proved to be the easiest install, with the most built in functionality.
7.0 didn't have Star Office and kmail, istr. With 8.0, I've had to do very
little searching out of feral rpm's to install - almost everything that I
really need came with the original package. That convenience was a major
plus, and let me drop windows as soon as I was satisfied that I had my basic
system working.

Part of this may be my own improved ability to find sources of support that I
didn't know about a year ago, too. Both the newbies list and a similar local
list have proven useful, as has usenet. You definitely want to seek out your
local LUG as well though - they tend to provide solid knowledge and
assistance. Since you're in London, check out http://gllug.linux.co.uk/ I'm
taking my machine to a local install fest in a couple of weeks (CLUE - Sept
15, if any Denver locals are reading this) to resolve a couple of low
priority configuration issues.
