Check out ftp.xfree86.org. In the /pub/XFree86/4.1.0 directory, download Xinstall.bin and Xinstall.sh. Run the Xinstall.sh and it will tell you what you need to download. Make sure you read through the docs though. They are very helpful, and it tells you how to determine which version of the 4.1.0 release you will need for your machine. Here's what I needed to download, and a patch. It's a pretty simple install, but it took a while. I have a 1.2 Ghz Athlon, and I think it took 30 minutes to do everything. But part of it you had to answer some questions.
