Thanks to the Guys who responded regarding the fonts and firewall. It was simply a case of confusing Mandrake Control Centre with the KDE Control Panel setup.
Once I sat and thought about things, and read what was in front of me, it all worked out fine. Name of the game with linux I guess. Thanks again. Mark A
