I have the same trouble..and I've been fooled by Compaq aswell.....I think we should hassle them everyday 'till they will release a working driver for their modem with conexant chipset under linux....anyway...in the meanwhile I'm going on playing with the driver I downloaded and the wrapper to make them work with 2.4 kernels....if I get any good results I'll let you know Regards Maurizio
