Try typing 'gdm' from a root console.

That should startx and put you into the Gnome graphical login (from which you 
can launch KDE or Gnome)


Another 'off the wall suggestion'  Have you tried CTl+Alt+F2,,  CTl+Alt+F3 
etc through to F11 ?   Its just possible your graphical log in has been 
started up in a different display.
