What I am looking for is a way to automate this. I use a program called FinePrint in
Windows that acts as a 'virtual' printer driver and handles the printing of the
even/odd pages for me. All I have to do is print with the 'FinePrint' driver, wait for
the printing to complete, reload the paper, and click 'Ok' to print the other side.

Same as under Windows. I just had a quick look and Kmail, Kword and Open
Office all offer the option to print odd or even pages. Abiword doesn't
have the option so it's obviously program dependent.
