Thanks for the replies. I got the Zip drive working with a friend's assistance ("modprobe ppa", whatever THAT is, plus additions to /dev/fstab and /etc/modules).
The floppy drive still refuses to be acknowledged. /dev/fstab has a perfectly correct-looking entry for it. The dmesg log features this bit: (I don't know if it has any significance) -- ide-floppy driver 0.97 Partition check: /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0: p1 p2 < p5 p6 p7 p8 p9 > Floppy drive(s): fd0 is 1.44M floppy0: Floppy io-port 0x03f0 in use ide-floppy driver 0.97 -- The Mandrake version is 8.1.
